Leila de Lima: You can Never Bring a Strong Woman Down

Ayon sa magazine, “President Rodrigo Duterte’s hard-line policies against drug dealers are polarizing globally, but in the Philippines they’ve faced little dissent. De Lima, who headed a committee investigating hundreds of extrajudicial killings under Duterte’s leadership, has been a noble exception.”

Dagdag pa ng Fortune magazine, “Last February she was arrested and jailed for as-yet-untried crimes, but imprisonment hasn’t stopped the firebrand from continuing to speak out publicly.”

Time Magazine’s Most Influential People

Ayon sa sulat ni Former US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Williams, “It is a disturbing testament to the current solidarity among strongmen and the global surge in impunity that de Lima’s cause has not been more embraced.”

Dagdag pa ni Williams, “And yet, even from prison, she continues to speak out against her President: ‘It’s not O.K. with me that we have a murderous psychopath occupying the highest post in the land.’.”

Amnesty International’s Human Rights Defenders Under Threat

Ayon sa report, “In the Philippines in February 2017, Human Rights Defender Senator Leila de Lima, a former justice secretary and former chair of the Philippine Commission on Human Rights, was arrested on politically motivated charges.”

Liberal International’s Prize of Freedom Award

Ayon kay Liberal International’s Human Rights Committee Chairman Markus Loning, “Even from inside the prison she keeps fighting for the rule of law and the dignity of individuals. She should immediately be released from pre-trial detention.”

Ang Prize for Freedom ay ibinibigay sa mga “well-known personality of liberal conviction who has made outstanding efforts for the defense of freedom and human rights.”

Foreign Policy Magazine’s Leading Global Thinker

Ayon sa sinulat ni Foreign Policy Associate Editor Benjamin Soloway, “From the beginning, de Lima knew how dangerous her unfettered criticism of her country’s leader might prove […] But de Lima has refused to shut up.”

Ayon sa speech ng senadora na binasa ni Foreign Policy Editor in Chief Jonathan Tepperman, “No high concrete walls, barbed wires or caged environment can silence me. I remain free in spirit, and unbroken. I’m not giving up on the cause of truth, justice and human rights. To the world, keep watching the Philippines.”
